Because bassinets are used for such a short amount of time, on average six months, many manufactures add additional features to make the purchase of a bassinet more enticing. Some bassinets are fully convertible units with conversion kits which can be used as large cribs and eventually toddler beds, others come with wheels which can be moved around the house, others have a drop-down side to facilitate co-sleeping, and then you get plain models consisting of a sleeping basket/pod and a stand. This is before we even get to electronic and app-controlled models.
It is recommended that babies room share with their parents (or just father or mother) for the first six months. Even if you do not choose a bassinet with a co-sleeper function, many mothers find it convenient to have the bassinet close to their bed to facilitate nighttime feedings and soothing. Measure the space between your side of the bed and the wall and, if you do elect the co-sleeping function, measure the height of your bed as well. If you select a fully convertible bassinet, pay specific attention to the sizes after each conversion to ensure it will serve you at each stage and in each room where it will be placed.
Budget
Unless you are investing in a fully convertible bassinet, you plan on having additional children, or you have an extremely flexible budget we recommend keeping your investment in a bassinet relatively low. Although a bassinet can be extremely useful, it is used for such a short amount of time that it is not worth stretching your budget for. Another plan can always be made, such as starting off baby in a traditional crib or travel cot in your room. Bassinets can also often be found in really great condition second hand exactly because of the short time they are used. If you do purchase a second-hand bassinet, we recommend purchasing a new mattress and having the bassinet pressure washed or steam cleaned.

It’s recommended to take this step as the specific mattress and linens for a specific bassinet might be more that you’re willing to invest.

Lastly, any material used in baby sleep furniture should be non-toxic. Importing, however, is not your only option. You’ll want to select a model that gives you the most options, without compromising on safety and affordability; because you won’t know your baby’s specific preferences or needs until they arrive. A drop down-side on a bassinet or travel cot can mimic co-sleeping whist ensuring you baby has their own sleep space. This is a commonly used future as it makes soothing and nighttime feedings easier. Adjustable heights and angles are wonderful for reflux babies who need to be inclined for at least 30 minutes after feeding. Rocking and vibrating capabilities are tricky because your baby will either love or hate them. It is for this reason we rank these features last.
